ART: ANDRE PETTERSON

As if literary lucidity flowing from the keys, words falling from the leaves of tomes, spilling ideas from an inspired mind, Andre Petterson’s mixed-media works reflect a life long fascination with motion, music, machines and movement. He begins each work by taking a photograph, over which he works in layers with paint and brush. Typewriters, sewing machines, sundry pieces of antiquated equipment speak to the beauty of chaos and creativity. Graphic, kinetic, and organic, the artist, who resides in Canada, possesses a conceptual thesis that makes his work thoroughly riveting.

Andre Petterson: I am… fascinated by gesture, immediate image photography, light play on objects. I stay inspired by travel… and taking chances. This gets more difficult each year but more satisfying when it works.

I have always been impressed by Anselm Keifer / Edward Keinholz / Richard Serra / Maurizio Cattelan / Robert Gober in the contemporary art world. Of the old world, Rembrandt for his use of light and Da Vinci for his pure genius.

…art is idea based. I don’t care as much about technique as I do about how meaningful or interesting a work is. If I’m moved in any way, that’s enough. I don’t care what the material is or how long it took. I look for my own voice in the making of art. Not regurgitating others is my biggest challenge.
